Year in Review:Apps for Better Lives in 2024

As 2024 rapidly draws to a close, our team is taking a breath to look back and celebrate our clients’ app milestones.

It’s been a fantastic year for our clients who continue to grow and create social impact through their apps in the HealthTech, EdTech and for-purpose space.

Their apps are...

  • Breaking down language barriers with AI to make healthcare more accessible.
  • Strengthening data visibility to enhance professional development for Victoria’s education sector.
  • Empowering people around the world to fundraise for mental health – and get fit and have fun along the way.
  • Raising money to provide clean drinking water to children in Bangladesh.

We also take a moment to celebrate highlights from our team, who bring their passion for technology and people to making these apps possible every day.

Improving access to health information with AI

Dr Tina Campbell and her team at Healthily have had a year of significant wins for their HealthTech product, GoShare Healthcare. GoShare enables healthcare professionals to distribute tailored health content packages to thousands of patients with chronic illness and their carers. The GoShare web app is used by numerous peak health organisations across Australia.

We’re proud to have been a part of Healthily’s journey over the last 10 years, from startup to successful HealthTech company, and to continue and strengthen our partnership. Most recently, we collaborated with the team on building conversational voice AI into GoShare so that patients can interact with a digital assistant in their preferred language.

Tina recently presented at AI+ Care 2024 – an Australasian Institute of Digital Health conference to advance data-driven healthcare – on how conversational voice AI is transforming patient education and engagement.

Following her presentation, Tina joined a panel discussion on the adoption of AI in healthcare alongside Associate Professor Christopher Pearce (Macquarie University), Dr Sean Chung (Deloitte), Dr Meg Tonkin (Design Tobias) and Dr Hoa Ngo (CSIRO).

Tina also shared insights on AI for healthcare accessibility at the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care Primary Care 2024 Conference, alongside Bettina McMahon (Healthdirect Australia) and Dr Lee Fong (Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Healthcare). It’s fantastic to see Healthily helping to shape the future of AI in healthcare through these forums.

In another win for the year, Healthily was selected as one of six life-changing digital health companies to receive funding through the prestigious ANDHealth+ program. ANDHealth+ is Australia’s leading health technology accelerator, supported by the Australian Government Medical Research Future Fund and delivered by ANDHealth. Healthily’s success is a testament to Tina’s continuous innovation to bring new solutions to market

Enhancing professional development for Victoria’s education sector

The Chisholm Institute’s Educator Passport app is a one-stop shop that meets educator, institute and regulatory requirements relating to professional development. This year, we delivered significant enhancements to support further expansion of the Educator Passport into more TAFEs and registered training organisations.

Launched this month, the enhancements are the culmination of over 18 months of work. Undertaken through the Victorian Department of Education’s broader push to improve insight into the sector’s workforce development needs, the enhancements will deliver greater data visibility to support auditing, resource allocation and decision making.

Pushing for better mental health

Another highlight was helping to take The Push-Up Challenge to Canada in its first international expansion, enabling more people than ever before to push for better mental health. We also helped to introduce multilingual capability and more features to the app to support an engaging experience. It’s brilliant to see their continued growth, development and reach as an organisation.

The Push-Up Challenge app launched over four years ago and is going strong, reaching #1 in App Store and #1 in Play Store. The app has served 600K+ people across Australia in their incredible annual fundraising efforts for mental health. Together, participants raised over $12M through the app in 2024 to support the work of the Push for Better Foundation, Lifeline and Headspace, bringing the overall funds raised to $50M.

Now entering our fifth year of collaboration on design and development of the app, we’re working with The Push-Up Challenge team on new initiatives for 2025. Stay tuned!

Providing children with access to clean drinking water

We collaborated with Fleur Chambers in 2020 on designing and developing The Happy Habit app. The award-winning app helps people around the world to make meditation a daily habit for happiness, health and wellbeing. Since then, we’ve continued to support behind the scenes to iterate on the app with Fleur and keep it running smoothly.

Fleur is passionate about using meditation as a tool to create positive social and environmental change. A multi-award-winning meditation teacher and bestselling author, Fleur’s guided meditations, online courses and books have been downloaded 3M+ times in 45+ countries.

As a social enterprise, The Happy Habit donates 50% of profits to grassroots projects tackling social and environmental problems around the world. With every app subscription, four children receive access to clean drinking water through the installation of water systems in schools across Bangladesh. We’re thrilled to witness the continued growth of Fleur’s social impact.

Expanding team to help clients build apps for better lives

The Wave Digital team
The Wave Digital team at Our Community House in North Melbourne.

Our team expanded this year, strengthening our design and product offering.

We welcomed Craig Drayton as Client Product Manager. Craig has spent many years leading and building new digital products, with experience in product design and validation, engineering, agile delivery and digital startups

He’s been a great asset to the team and someone that our startup founders have really enjoyed working with in the very formative stages of their idea. It’s rare to find someone with Craig’s expertise who can help founders discover their product market fit.

We also welcomed a number of new talented staff, bringing our fully remote team to its biggest headcount to date. It's been an exciting and challenging transition to evolve a unique, engaging employee experience and culture to suit a diverse range of personalities and skillsets. This has helped to bring out the best in everyone individually and as a result, in Wave as a whole.

Lastly, we recently celebrated Technical Director David Wolfe’s 10 year anniversary with Wave Digital. Starting as a senior developer, David has been instrumental in the growth of our business and we are so grateful for all of his hard work and dedication for so long. He is not only a part of the furniture, but a designer and creator of the furniture.

Earlier this year, David headed off on his well-earned long-service leave for 3 months, travelling around Australia with his family in a caravan. We’re so happy that David had the chance to live this dream.
